Concentrix and JC plan utility-scale CPV projects

Germany’s Concentrix Solar is partnering with Johnson Controls (JC) to develop utility-scale concentrating solar power projects. JC will be responsible for the development, construction, operation and maintenance of the projects, with Concentrix providing its concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) technology.

CPV involves the use of lenses to collect and focus sunlight on to layers of high efficiency solar photovoltaic cells. Concentrix claims its system has a conversion efficiency of 25%, far higher than the efficiency of conventional silicon-based cells.

In December, Soitec snapped up an 80% stake in Concentrix in a EUR55m (USD76.6m) deal. Soitec makes products that include silicon-on-insulator wafers. Earlier this year, Concentrix joined the Desertec Industrial Initiative (DII) as an associated partner. The DII was set up last year to develop a network of wind and solar energy installations in the deserts of North Africa by 2050. The projects will supply electricity to Europe, the Middle East and northern Africa.
