California-based NanoH2O is partnering with Veolia Water to test its thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane technology in various seawater conditions. The firm claims its material is more permeable than competing membranes, while maintaining the required salt and contaminant rejection levels. NanoH2O says this can reduce energy consumption by up to 20%.

The firm also claims installing its TFN membrane does not require many modifications to existing water treatment plants. It will trial its technology in facilities operated by Veolia.

Founded in 2005, NanoH2O last year raised USD15m in funding from Oak Investment Partners and Khosla Ventures.
