Boston-based First Wind is receiving a USD117m loan guarantee from the US Department of Energy to develop a wind farm in Hawaii. The Kahuku project will have a 30MW capacity and will incorporate a battery energy storage system. The wind farm is in final permitting stages and will begin construction once approval is delivered by the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission.
The project will use a battery system developed by Texas-based Xtreme Power which will be able to store and provide up to 10MW of power for a minimum of an hour during periods of low wind speeds. The 2.5MW wind turbines for the project will be manufactured by Clipper Windpower.
Under its Clean Energy Initiative, Hawaii aims to get 70% of the state’s energy for electricity and transportation from renewable sources by 2030.
