Akcansa to cut emissions at Turkish cement factory

Turkish cement producer Akcansa plans to meet almost a third of the energy needs of one of its factories using waste heat, according to Hurriyet. The facility will have a 15MW capacity and is expected to cost USD24m to construct. Waste heat will be captured by exchangers at production lines in Akcansa’s Canakkale factory, and used to generate steam for electricity generation. The plant will support 30% of the factory’s energy requirements and will reportedly cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by 60,000 tons.

In July, French building materials firm Lafarge participated in the first closing of UK-based Novacem’s green cement bond. The firm is developing cement which it claims absorbs more carbon dioxide over its life than it emits. Akcansa is a joint venture between Sabanci Holding and HeidelbergCement, and reportedly plans to spend USD200m on projects over the next five years.
