E.ON Climate & Renewables and Bionersis plan to invest EUR6.6m (USD9m) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at a landfill site near Hanoi in Vietnam. The Nam Son landfill spans 40 hectares and receives 3,000 tons per day of domestic waste. The partners will install technology to capture methane from the site, with the first phase of the project scheduled to begin in Q3. Over the 20-year lifespan of the project, E.ON estimates up to 4.5m tonnes of carbon dioxide could be avoided. The pair plan to use the recovered methane to generate electricity in the local area in the future.

Deal Details

The project is the second to be undertaken by E.ON and Bionersis since the pair teamed up to develop clean development mechanism (CDM) projects in South East Asia. The Vietnamese authorities have approved methane recovery at the Nam Son landfill and Rina Group has been appointed to validate and register the CDM project.
