Auckland-based LanzaTech is partnering with Chinese coal producer Henan Coal and Chemical Industrial (HNCC) to produce ethanol and chemicals. The pair will construct a demonstration-scale plant in Zhengzhou, Henan province. The facility, scheduled for completion in the second half of next year, will use a combination of coal gasification and LanzaTech’s biological fermentation process.

Separately, the partners are collaborating with the ChineseAcademy of Sciences (CAS) to set up a Bio Energy Research Centre in the country. The centre will focus on developing and commercialising technology to convert coal-derived synthesis gas into fuels and chemicals.

In July, LanzaTech raised USD18m in Series B funding from Qiming Ventures, Softbank China Venture Capital, Khosla Ventures and K1W1. The firm is developing bacteria for converting industrial waste gases into fuels and chemicals. Earlier this year, the firm teamed up with CAS and Baosteel to build a demonstration plant at one of the steel maker’s mills.
