HK Electric plans to develop a wind farm off the coast of Hong Kong. The project, located in the southwest Lamma Channel, will have a capacity of around 100MW and is expected to cost up HKD3bn (USD386m).The wind farm will span 600 hectares and is likely to comprise between 28 and 35 turbines. Eight sites are being explored approximately 4km from Lamma Island, with construction scheduled for completion in 2015.
According to HK, an environmental impact assessment (EIA) has concluded Hong Kong lacks sufficient land for wind farm development. The EIA study also says the project will not have any significantly adverse impacts on marine ecology, water quality or fisheries, according to the firm.
