Ikea buys German wind farms from Gamesa

Home furnishings firm Ikea is paying an undisclosed sum to acquire six wind farms from Spanish wind turbine maker Gamesa. The projects are located in Germany and have a combined capacity of 45MW.

Last month, Ikea teamed up with the US Department of Energy to study the benefits of using geothermal energy systems for heating and cooling. The firm is installing a heat pump system beneath an under-construction store in Colorado and the DoE’s National Renewable Energy Research Laboratory (NREL) will gather data on it to help improve efficiency.

Gamesa claims to have developed 190MW of wind energy capacity wince 2003, with a current project pipeline of more than 500MW. In August, the firm partnered with Iberdrola to develop a 102MW wind farm in Honduras. The project is scheduled for completion within 18 months.
