BASF is paying an undisclosed amount to acquire the electrolytes business of fellow German chemical firm Merck. The deal includes the complete line of finished electrolyte formulations, a variety of additives for electrolytes used to produce lithium-ion batteries and Merck’s research portfolio for novel electrolytes and additives. Electrolytes carry electric charge inside batteries, and BASF says the acquisition will help it offer customised formulations for battery manufacturers.
