Markus Beck, the former head of First Solar’s CIGS (copper indium gallium diselenide) thin-film solar programme hopes to raise between USD130m and USD150m from investors to produce CIGS panels using a new process, according to earth2tech. First Solar, which manufactures cadmium telluride-based thin-film solar cells, cut its R&D programme for CIGS in December, with the company reportedly acknowledging that it would take considerable spend to complete with others further ahead in developing the technology. Beck admits it will be a struggle to secure funding from venture capitals and corporations, however, if he does, the venture could begin commercially producing solar panels in around three years time.
