Verdant Power has won approval from the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to develop a pilot-scale tidal power project in New York City’s East River. The Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy (RITE) project, located in the river’s East Channel, will comprise 30 tidal turbines and have a capacity of just over 1MW. The license from FERC will enable Verdant to operate the pilot installation for a period of 10 years to test the technology’s commercial viability. According to Bloomberg, the firm plans to install five turbines before the end of 2013, with the remainder to be deployed by 2015.
