German carmaker BMW is teaming up with smart grid firm Tendril to build a demonstration smart energy home in California to prepare for the launch of its ActiveE electric vehicle (EV). The US firm provides a ZigBee-based wireless communications network which enables consumers and utilities to monitor energy consumption through an online portal or in-home display. The platform will connect the ActiveE with the smart home and enable the driver to manage and monitor the EV’s charging station, while making use of cheaper off-peak electricity when possible.
