Danish shipping firm has completed testing algae-based biofuel produced by Solazyme on a voyage between Germany and India. The container vessel testing the fuel travelled 6,500 nautical miles and used 30 tons of the diesel replacement. Maersk engineers trialled blends ranging from 7% to 100% on an auxiliary engine throughout the voyage. The crew analysed the effects on power efficiency and engine wear and tear, as well as emissions data from nitrogen and sulphur oxides.
