California-based Genomatica and Novamont are forming a joint venture to build a production plant for renewable butanediol (BDO) in Europe. Bioplastics maker Novamont will hold a majority interest in the venture, and plans to purchase the entire BDO output for use in its own biopolymer products. Bio-BDO is an intermediate chemical used to make products such as spandex, automotive plastics and insulation and reportedly has a USD4bn market worldwide.
