Nissan, ABB and others to test EV batteries for grid usage

Fri Jan 20 2012, 09:37 AM

Japanese carmaker Nissan is partnering with 4R Energy, Sumitomo and Swiss power and automation firm ABB to evaluate the reuse of lithium-ion battery packs that power its LEAF electric vehicle (EV). The companies will work together to test and analyse the residential and commercial applications of energy storage systems using the reclaimed batteries. It is hoped the systems can be used to store power from the grid during times of low usage and feed it back into the grid during period of peak demand, which would increase grid reliability performance and provide back-up power during outages.
