UK-based Eight19 is teaming up with charity SolarAid to set up a USD200,000 fund to roll out its “pay-as-you-go” solar power systems in East Africa. The Kickstart Sustainable Energy Fund aims to provide rural off-grid communities with solar lighting and in-home phone charging, which they can pay for weekly using scratchcards, similar to those used top-up pay-as-you-go mobile phones. The scratchcards will cost around USD1 per week for a standard system, which Eight19 claims is less than half the typical cost users spend on kerosene lighting and phone charging.
