California-based Amyris plans to form a joint venture with ethanol producer ETH Bioenergia to produce renewable farnesene, which can be used in products such as base oils, lubricants and diesel. ETH will own a majority share of the venture, which will make use of up to 2m tons per year of the Brazilian firm's sugarcane crushing capacity. Amyris will retain exclusive marketing rights for the farnesene produced at the facility, which is expected to begin operating in 2014.
