US carbon capture projects get USD67m

Thu Aug 18 2011, 09:32 AM

Four carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects are receiving USD67m in funding to further develop the technology. The funding will be handed out over the next four years and comprises USD52m from the US Department of Energy (DoE) and USD15m in non-federal cost sharing. The projects aim to capture a minimum of 90% of carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants without increasing the cost of electricity by more than 35%. According to the DoE, existing CCS systems need large amounts of energy to operate, which results in reduced efficiency and net power output, and can increase the cost of electricity at a coal-fired power plant by up to 80%.
