Beacon wins approval for flywheel energy storage plant

Massachusetts-based Beacon Power has received approval from the New York State Public Service Commission for a flywheel plant. The facility will store excess electricity and supply it back to the grid at periods of high demand. Flywheels use rotational energy to store power and are said to be cheaper and more environmentally-friendly than batteries.
