New York firm Solar Thin Films, which produces manufacturing equipment for makers of thin-film amorphous silicon cells, is acquiring Algatec Solar in an all-stock deal. German firm Algatec makes silicon cells from metallurgical silicon, a cheaper, but less pure, form of silicon than that typically used to make solar cells. The firm has a contract backlog of 92MW of metallurgical silicon modules for next year, the majority of which will go to German solar giant Q-Cells.
